Welcome back, Spring!
Daylight Saving Time, daffodils, bunnies, white sneakers...what's not to like?
Welcome back to The Walking Writer! (That’s me and maybe it’s you too?) Thanks for subscribing, while I get the hang of this newfangled newsletter/blog thingie. I hope it will be a great place to connect with you.
Here’s what’s in store for you:
A sneak peek at something I’m working on:
A personal essay about a walk that took longer than expected
2. A sneak peek from my new/upcoming novel, My Summer of Wind and Poppies, about an even longer walk.
3. Recommended reading - walking memoirs, because you can write a memoir about anything
4. Apps for walkers because why not use our screens for getting away from our screens?
What I’m Working On:
I’m walking through a cloud, alone in the world with a friend, following the fog-enshrouded silhouettes of our husbands far ahead on the sand like a memory from the last scene of Planet of the Apes. We laugh because we know the world is still there, unlike the movie: our hotel, our car, our lives….But just for now, as we walk away, we see only the white surf, the gray sand, the pale green grass atop the dunes…
My Summer of Wind and Poppies:
She looked exactly as she had on the day she left, five years ago. She wore her long brown skirt again and what she called her “peasant blouse,” a white puffy-sleeved top hanging loose, embroidered with many colors in a design of flowers across the bodice. Her brown hair was longer now than the last time I had seen her and tied behind her head with a blue ribbon. For a woman of my same age, she looked a decade younger, and I remembered how in Future America even old women had hair the color of a young bride’s. It was a mystery I would like to find the answer to.
Book Recommendation:
Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, is Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 memoir of her 1,100 mile hike to find her life’s path after the sudden death of her mother, her own addictions, and her broken relationships. It will make you want to take a walk alone, in nature, without headphones to see what comes up for you. Be prepared for surprises!
Walking app:
All Trails A guide with maps to trails all over the world, you can log on wherever you are. I love to use this when I have some time for a walk and I’m in a new town. Also, it’s fun just to look at the pictures…Paris, Gloversville, Punxsutawny…
I hope you’ve found something here to brighten your day. Thanks for reading. And maybe take a walk. Happy trails!
Love the idea of a sneak peek at your upcoming novel! When will it be out?
Judith: thought you might find this interesting!
